Gallery 9 is proud to present a new exhibition by Michael Taylor. Known for his detailed observations of nature and his enigmatic painting style, this new series of paintings continue Taylor’s investigation of the landscape in and around the South Coast of NSW where he has been living and working for several decades.

Standing before Michael Taylor’s paintings its almost as if you are within the landscape itself. Taylor spends long periods of time walking, studying and sketching natural features before he enters his studio and his impressions of his surroundings are revealed in dynamic swirls of lines and bright colours that depict the feeling of being in a place.

Witnessing the passing landscape from a car window is also a big component of the works and some paintings such as Drive Home seem to depict both the blur of the green from the trees alongside the road and the bright colours of the cars passing. His paintings are not only about the natural landscape, but also reference people within it such as the way ancient shell middens (revealling traces of human interaction from hundreds of years ago) might be discovered on a walk through the bush today.

An eminent Australian artist, Michael Taylor has been exhibiting regularly since 1963.His work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, all the Australian state galleries and numerous regional, institutional and corporate collections. He has participated in many international and Australian exhibitions including some of he seminal exhibiitons of the 1960s such as Biennale des Jeunes, Paris (1963); Contemporary Australian Painting, Los Angeles (1966) Australian Art Today which toured South-East Asia (1969); Ten Australians which toured Europe (1974/75). More recently Taylor was included in Moist, National Gallery of Australia (2005), Fireworks which toured to regional galleries in Queensland, NSW and Victoria (2005) and Exhibition Swing at the Canberra Museum and Gallery (2006).
